Resonance

Consonia accumulans·the Answering Cloud

From Latin consonare, to sound together, and accumulare, to heap up; it answers what moves in time with it and heaps each answer on the last.

Answering Cloud, the whole specimen
Plate L. Consonia accumulans, the whole specimen.

A system answers most strongly to what moves at its own rhythm, so timing can matter more than force.

Small forces well timed outweigh large forces badly timed.

behavior Lies slack and dim until something nearby moves at its own frequency, then swells, ring by ring, until it hums.

provocation

What would a building, an institution or a conversation look like if it could not be pushed hard, only timed well?

Each draw is the being derived afresh by the current laws at another seed (laws §11); the chosen one leads (where they sit in the morphospace).

I Dissection

Each organ answers one question about the idea. The framed one, its mechanism, is the dominant organ: the being's class, the one the idea could not lose and stay itself.

Kernel of Resonance

Fig. 1. Kernel

Natural frequency

Which premise, if it were false, would kill this idea?

A body driven at its own natural frequency takes in energy far more readily than at any other, so a small periodic push can build a large response.1

Boundary of Resonance

Fig. 2. Boundary

Critical damping

What sets it apart from what it is not, and how does it keep that distinction?

It is defined against what is aperiodic and against damping; where energy leaks away faster than it builds, there is no resonance.1

Intake of Resonance

Fig. 3. Intake

Driving force

What must it feed on to work? What has to be present, noticed or supplied?

It needs a periodic driving force, a body with a natural frequency close to that force, and damping low enough for energy to be stored between pushes.1

Mechanism of Resonance

Pushed swing

❦ dominant organ

How does it turn what it takes in into what it gives out?

Each push arrives in phase with the motion it meets, so energy accumulates cycle after cycle faster than damping can remove it.1

Output of Resonance

Fig. 5. Output

Standing wave

What does it make possible, visible or knowable?

One frequency is amplified above all others, which gives sustained oscillation, selectivity (tuning) and coupling between bodies that are far apart.1, 2

Dispersal of Resonance

Fig. 6. Dispersal

Sympathetic vibration

What part of it travels into other minds, ideas and fields, and by what vector?

It travels as the image of the tuning fork and the singing glass, and as the metaphor of being in tune with people, places and the world.3

drawn as: sympathetic vibration · view: series

Decay of Resonance

Fig. 7. Decay

Shattered glass

What can it not digest, where does it fail, and what does it leave behind for others?

It cannot digest what is not periodic, the one-off event and broadband noise; left unchecked it runs into destructive amplification, and as a metaphor it thins into vague talk of good vibrations.4, 3

drawn as: shattered glass · view: exploded
