Plate LXXXVII. Hesychometra gradata, the whole specimen.
Stillness can be the variable of a science; as sound is withdrawn and breath slows step by step, experience changes in an order that trained observers can map and share.
Stillness has depths, and each depth has its own experience.
behavior A tall column of chambers that grows paler and stiller toward its base, where small sensing forms settle one step at a time.
provocation
What would you notice at the next step down into quiet, and could someone else find it there too?
Each draw is the being derived afresh by the current laws at another seed (laws §11); the chosen one leads (where they sit in the morphospace).
I Dissection
Each organ answers one question about the idea. The framed one, its kernel, is
the dominant organ: the being's class, the one the idea could not lose and stay itself.
Fig. 1. Kernel
Interior castle
❦ dominant organ
Which premise, if it were false, would kill this idea?
Stillness is not one state but a scale, and experience changes in regular ways as sound is withdrawn and breath slows, so the scale can be mapped.2, 1
drawn as: interior castle · view: detached
Fig. 2. Boundary
Psychophysical scale
What sets it apart from what it is not, and how does it keep that distinction?
It is set apart from contemplative practice by measuring and comparing, and from neuroscience by taking stillness itself, not the brain, as its object.1
What must it feed on to work? What has to be present, noticed or supplied?
It feeds on quiet rooms and anechoic chambers, on paced and slowed breathing, and on observers trained to report what stillness changes in them.2, 4
drawn as: anechoic chamber · view: at work
Fig. 4. Mechanism
Staircase method
How does it turn what it takes in into what it gives out?
Sound and breath are lowered by known steps; at each step observers describe the felt quality of the moment, and the descriptions are compared across observers and against their breath and pulse.4, 5
drawn as: staircase method · view: pinned
Fig. 5. Output
Depth chart
What does it make possible, visible or knowable?
It gives an atlas of stillness, the states that appear at each depth of quiet, the loud inner sounds of a silent room, the slowing of time, the edges of sleep.3, 2
drawn as: depth chart · view: series
Fig. 6. Dispersal
Field guide
What part of it travels into other minds, ideas and fields, and by what vector?
It would travel through retreats, sensory rooms and hospital wards, wherever people are asked to be still, as maps of what they may meet.2
drawn as: field guide · view: microscope
Fig. 7. Decay
Observer effect
What can it not digest, where does it fail, and what does it leave behind for others?
It cannot reach stillness without disturbing it, since every report breaks the quiet, and it leans on traditions whose aim was never to measure.1
drawn as: observer effect · view: cross section
Fig. 8. Substrate
Felt sense
What territory of phenomena does it live on?
It lives on the territory of stillness, the felt life of a body as sound and breath are withdrawn.3
drawn as: substrate · view: microscope
Fig. 9. Climate
Mutual constraints
What counts as evidence and as a good result here?
A state counts as found when observers who reach the same depth of stillness, of sound and of breath, report it in the same terms, and their reports predict what is measured in them.5
Qualia is what it maps, and Silence and Breath are the two dials of its stillness.
Fig. 11. Ecotones
Flotation tank
Where does it border other fields, and what grows at those borders?
It borders the hesychast and other contemplative traditions, which reach stillness without measuring it, and research on restricted stimulation and breathing, which measures without mapping experience; at its margins grow quiet-room studies and slow-breathing trials, and the methods of neurophenomenology.1, 2

pioneer
Fig. 12. Succession
Foundation stone
What stage is it in, pioneer, maturing, climax or disturbed?
It does not exist yet; this entry is its founding proposal.

If it is right
Observers brought step by step into silence and slow breathing report the same changes in the same order, first the body's own sounds, then a slowing of time, then drowsiness, more consistently than chance would allow.
The depth at which each change appears depends on both dials together, so a quiet room with fast breathing and a noisier room with slow breathing reach different states.
Trained observers agree on the order of the states more than untrained ones, but untrained observers meet the same states.
Fruits
study
The stillness ladder
Bring volunteers down through a fixed ladder of quiet and slowed breathing, in an anechoic room with paced breathing from twelve to five breaths a minute, and at each rung ask a few fixed questions about what they notice. Then test whether the states and their order recur across people.2, 4
What would you notice at the next step down into quiet?
interface
The stillness dial
A room control with two dials, one for sound and one for the pace of a breathing guide, and a short log where whoever uses it notes what they meet at each step down, so that anyone can take part in mapping stillness at home.

artwork
An atlas of quiet
An illustrated atlas of the states of stillness gathered from many observers, each drawn as a stratum at the depth where it appears, with the words of those who met it, from the first loud inner sounds of a silent room to the edge of sleep.3, 2
Does stillness have depths, and do we all meet them in the same order?
bridge All three are attended to from inside. Breath and silence are the oldest ways of turning attention onto experience itself.
friction Qualia is private and resists measurement; breath can be counted from outside; silence is only a condition, not an object.
tension Can a science take lived experience as evidence without trusting it blindly or explaining it away?
questions neither parent could ask
What would count as a good description of the moment a thought arises?
Can a trained report sort brain recordings better than the recordings sort themselves?
Why have contemplative traditions everywhere used the breath and silence to look at the mind?
succession: What field grows on lived experience, with breath and silence as its instruments?
Sterile. Every field imagined already exists under its own name; imagined again below.

Needs all three keystones: Silence and Breath as the two dials of stillness, Qualia as what changes. Grounded in the hesychast practice of stillness and breath prayer, in research on restricted stimulation and in work on perception across the breathing cycle, but no field takes stillness itself as its variable.
