Plate LXXI. Murmurus babelicus, the whole specimen.
The hum of a crowded room, where so many voices' syllables mix that none can be told apart, is the heat death of speech; only one's own name still rises out of it.
Speech at its greatest disorder still keeps one word.
behavior A grey cloud of murmuring that hangs over gatherings, swelling with every new voice, through which a single bright thread now and then rises.
provocation
What would make you hear your name in a room where you cannot make out anything else?
Each draw is the being derived afresh by the current laws at another seed (laws §11); the chosen one leads (where they sit in the morphospace).
I Dissection
Each organ answers one question about the idea. The framed one, its output, is
the dominant organ: the being's class, the one the idea could not lose and stay itself.
Which premise, if it were false, would kill this idea?
Where many voices speak at once their syllables mix until no one of them can be told apart, as heat evens out in a closed room; the hum of a crowded room is speech at its greatest disorder.1, 3

Fig. 2. Boundary
Informational masking
What sets it apart from what it is not, and how does it keep that distinction?
It is set apart from noise by being made of speech, every grain of it a syllable, and from conversation by having too many speakers for any one to be followed.3
How does it turn what it takes in into what it gives out?
Each mouth still opens and closes round its vowels, beat by beat, but beyond a few voices the beats overlap and fill each other's gaps, until the listener hears a steady hum in which no syllable stands out.3
It gives the murmur of cafés, stations and parties, and one exception that rises out of it, a listener's own name, heard across the room.1, 2

Walla
What part of it travels into other minds, ideas and fields, and by what vector?
It travels as the background of crowded rooms, and is recorded by film crews as walla, a murmur without words laid under crowd scenes.

Fig. 7. Decay
Howlround
What can it not digest, where does it fail, and what does it leave behind for others?
It breaks as soon as the voices are few, and it cannot drown the word that matters to a listener; a room that hums too loud makes everyone speak louder, so the hum feeds on itself until people leave.4

If it is right
As the number of voices talking at once grows past a handful, listeners stop picking out words and hear a steady murmur, and the change is sudden rather than gradual.
In such a murmur, words of personal weight, above all a listener's own name, are noticed far more often than other words of the same loudness.
A crowded room grows louder faster than its number of speakers would explain, because each speaker raises their voice against the hum.
Fruits
study
The name in the hum
Test how often a listener's own name, a stranger's name and a common word are noticed in recorded murmurs of two to forty voices, to find where speech becomes hum and which words still rise out of it.1, 2
Which words survive the heat death of speech?
artwork
The Babel room
A room in which a hundred recorded voices, each telling its own story, play at once; as a visitor walks toward one speaker the hum resolves into a single voice, and somewhere in the murmur each visitor's own name, given at the door, is said once.
Can you hear your name before you can hear anything else?
story
The city of names
A story of a city where everyone speaks at once and only names can still be heard, so that its people have learnt to say everything by calling each other's names in different tones.
bridge Both are about many small units and what their combining makes.
friction Entropy dissolves order blindly; Syllable remakes order with every beat, by rule.
tension If speech is order remade at every breath, what happens to it where too many breaths mix, or where two peoples stop sharing them?
